About Australian Shepherds
The Australian Shepherd is a medium sized breed that is highly intelligent. This breed is the only livestock herding breed developed in the United States - That’s right! They are not Australian at all. Early ancestors can be traced back to dogs that worked sheep on the west coast. The breed got its name due to the fact that the majority of these sheep were imported from Australia. (learn more about the history of the Aussie here).
This breed was developed to be primarily a working breed with strong herding and guarding instinct with the stamina to work all day. Aussies are extremely athletic dogs. They should move efficiently and effortlessly while remaining quick and agile.
Aussies are a loyal companion to their people, attentive and animated. They can be reserved with strangers on initial meetings, but not should not exhibit shyness - viciousness toward people or animals is intolerable.
This breed does require physical and mental exercise while working their minds is arguably the most important. They are highly biddable dogs that love to learn new things and perform tasks with great enthusiasm. They are incredibly versatile and excel in many avenues in the world of dog sports in addition to being wonderful active family companions and of course, working dogs.
Recognized colors: solid black, solid red, blue merle and red merle. All colors can be with or without white and/or copper trim. Blacks and blue merles have black noses and eye rims while reds and red merles have liver (brown) noses and eye rims.
Their eyes are very expressive and can be brown, blue, amber or any variation or combination. They can have flecks and/or marbling and different colored eyes.
The preferred height for males is 20 to 23 inches, females 18 to 21 inches.
